Brian has been practicing law since 1978, when he graduated with Honors from the University of Texas College of Law. As a third-year law student Brian was ranked third in the nation in the national Mock Trial competition. He then practiced intellectual property law with Brown & Bain in Phoenix, Arizona (later known as Perkins, Coie, Brown & Bain) and subsequently launched his own practice specializing in First Amendment matters and civil litigation.
In 1983 Brian co-founded RESOLVE Dispute Management, based in Chicago, which was one of the first mediation firms in the country. In 1996 Putnam’s published Brian’s book, The Heart of Conflict, which has been used in law schools and graduate dispute resolution programs across the country. Brian has trained hundreds of lawyers, mediators and judges in the art of conflict resolution and maintains an active mediation practice today. He has been recognized by the State Bar of Montana as a “Champion of Justice” for his work promoting pro bono resolution of parenting cases, and has a particular interest in domestic violence cases. Brian is also an active litigator and has represented clients in dozens of bench trials and hearings.
Brian is licensed to practice law in the states of Washington and Montana and is currently accepting new clients.
